What we mean by 'Carer'

Carers are defined in law as being unpaid family members, partners or friends who help a disabled, ill or frail person with the activities of daily living.

Caring is very common. About one in eight (1:8) people (over six million in the UK) currently have caring responsibilities and three in five people will have caring responsibilities at some point in their lives.

Many people do not recognise themselves as carers.
Invariably people for whom our services are intended call themselves any of the following.
  • Mother
  • Father
  • Wife
  • Husband
  • Partner
  • Sister
  • Brother
  • Grand parent
  • Aunt
  • Uncle
  • Cousin
  • Neighbour

  • Friend of the family
